The island of Utila is famous for its scuba diving (and snorkeling), and is known as the cheapest place in the world to get SCUBA certified. The world's second-largest barrier reef runs alongside Utila. It’s over 1000 km long and home to over 500 species of fish, 1000 manatees, and an amazing amount of dolphins. The island also has the largest local population of whale sharks, and a research center dedicated to studying them.
When you want a break from the salt water, visit Aladdin's cave; a popular area with a freshwater pool to dive into and cool off. Brandon Hill boasts bat caves, and Pumpkin Hill has various caves worth exploring. Stop by the Utila Iguana Research Station for an exciting look-see at the diverse species of swamp creatures in their natural surroundings. The station has varied species of iguana, including the very rare Ctemosaura baberi.
Getting around Utila is easy. There is one main street that runs the length of the island. It is lined with an ecclectic array of shops, restaurants, dive centers, and ice cream parlor. The main language spoken is English (with an interesting dialect) but most islanders speak Spanish as well. Eating here is cheap and filling, and bars are open late into the night for dancing and exchanging stories with other travellers.
There's plenty to explore on Utila, so grab your sandals and take a look around.
